7 of the Best Marketing Podcasts You Definitely Need to Follow

January 19, 2021

The adage that marketers are data rich and insight poor rings more true today than it ever has.

So, you thought figuring out how to do an A/B test with a CTA above and below the line to direct users to a lead funnel to build a subscriber base and earn brand equity was hard?

Well, tough luck because wait till you have to wrap your head around shoppable posts, AI-powered marketing, virtual reality, and hyper-personalization.

Yup, finding the right information at the right time is a tricky business. In fact, only 28% marketers spend their time doing their job.

This is one of the reasons why podcasts have been gaining popularity. They allow you to learn new skills while doing mundane tasks.

But, of the thousands of marketing podcast episodes out there, which should you be listening to? After all, you don’t need to know every piece of marketing wisdom all the time?

This article will show you how to find the right podcast episode quickly. We also share seven of the best marketing podcasts out there.

Let’s begin!

Still copying content into WordPress?

You’re doing it wrong… say goodbye forever to:

  • ❌ Cleaning HTML, removing span tags, line breaks, etc.
  • ❌ Creating your Table of Contents anchor ID links for all headers by hand,
  • ❌ Resizing & compressing images one-by-one before uploading back into your content,
  • ❌ Optimizing images with descriptive file names & alt text attributes,
  • ❌ Manually pasting target=“_blank” and/or “nofollow” attributes to every single link

How to Find Marketing Podcast Episodes: Our Top 4 Tools

While finding podcasts is easy, getting to relevant episodes is hard. Fortunately, there are a bunch of tools and podcast gear you can use here.

#1: Listen Notes

Since podcasts aren’t really a top priority for any of the big search engines, podcaster Wenbing Fang decided to make a tool himself.

Listen Notes has both the biggest as well as not so well known podcasters in their database. This means you’re much more likely to discover relevant content, regardless of authority.

The search engine lets you sort results by episodes, podcasts, curated lists, and interviews. You can hear a podcast right from the website and can save your favorite episodes.

#2: Apple Podcasts

While Listen Note has caught on, Apple Podcasts still rules the roost as far as number of users goes.

And, since it’s built right into most iOS devices, Apple users can start using it without downloading anything.

While they certainly have a respectable database of marketing podcasts, the list isn’t particularly large.

This is because podcasters have to submit their entries which are manually approved.

#3: Spotify for Podcasters

Spotify had reportedly spent $500 million on podcast related acquisitions and it shows.

We managed to find awesome (and expected) podcasts and episodes of every digital marketing related topic with little effort.

Even content marketing topics like blogging, email marketing, split testing and landing page optimization were there.

#4: Google Podcasts

Google’s podcast search engine offers a clean interface and a decent library. While Google was trailing behind its competitors, it has really picked up steam in recent years.

It now has a huge collection of podcast episodes on almost all aspects of marketing.

We were able to find some very informative podcasts on marketing strategy, social media marketing, and email marketing on there.

Even so, the web-based app doesn’t allow you to save your preferred episodes, so you’ll have to bookmark them.

This isn’t a problem in its Google Playstore version though.

You don’t need to learn how to use a bunch of different search engines to find the best marketing podcasts though. Google alone can help you out here.

Simply go over to Google and type in “keyword site:website.com” without the “”. Plugin your search phrase in place of keyword and replace website.com with the podcaster’s site.

So, if you want to find a podcast episode on “social media tools” from my favorite podcaster – growthmarketingtoolbox.com, go over to Google and type in —

social media tools site:growthmarketingtoolbox.com

Here’s a screenshot of the results:

You can replicate this process with any site and any keyword that you wish. But, you’ll need to know which site offers the best content on a particular digital marketing topic.

7 Digital Marketing Podcasts You Need to Follow

Full disclosure moving forward, the podcasts given below are our favorite picks.

It’s entirely possible you know better options or we missed something. In that case, feel free to leave your favorite picks below and let us know. We’ll be happy to grow our list if we think it adds value.

Firstly, all of the podcasts we went with are popular. Thousands of people in marketing circles follow them and share their episodes on social media.

But, we didn’t just get star-struck and follow the pack here either.

We took the time to go through the most popular ones, listen to as many episodes as possible, and make up our own mind.

Our criteria for making the list were simple —

  • The podcast channel must have a good library for its targeted topic.
  • The insights given should be actionable first, theory second. Meaning, step-by-step instructions rather than “I thinks” and “you coulds.”
  • The channel must specialize in a type of marketing. So, B2B marketer = B2B podcast = Great!
  • The podcasters should be taking current affairs into account.
  • The channel regularly invites experts in its field.

So, without further ado, here’s what we think are the best marketing podcasts!

#1: Growth Marketing Toolbox

Founded by growth marketer Nicholas Scalice, Growth Marketing Toolbox has 202 episodes as of this article and continues to grow.

Growth Marketing Toolbox really knows how to bring in the experts!

For example, Scalice interviews Jeremy Chatelaine and Jack Reamer in episode 197 which is on cold email personalization. Both Chatelaine and Reamer are well-known authorities in email marketing and they share some truly awesome strategies.

Each episode also has a list of all the tools mentioned in it so you don’t have to Google them. And, links to Linkedin profiles of each expert is given as well.

The bottom line is Scalice’s podcast channel is one of the best resources on inbound marketing we’ve come across.

It covers the basics well and builds on them in interesting and novel ways, so be sure to check it out.

#2: Data Driven Marketer

Now Data-Driven Marketer does lag the other podcasts here in total content published. But, each episode is so packed full of useful information that you cannot help but listen.

Episode 17, which is on digital marketing and Account-Based Marketing (ABM) during COVID-19 with Janet Polyakov is easily the most detailed take on the subject. You should try Polyakov’s ideas on website personalization if ABM is your thing.

Fair warning though, since the podcast is data-driven the lingo used is jargon and tech-speak heavy.

The channel is available on the iStore but non-Apple users can hear it on Stitcher.

#3:LeadPages Conversion Cast

Leadpages is one of the web’s premier resources on building landing pages. Its blog has awesome marketing tips on everything from basic copywriting to full-on conversion optimization.

Their Conversion Cast podcast is a fairly recent addition but already has some of the best content on how to convert like crazy!

Episodes include case studies like how Hubspot increased their conversions by 300% and how Moz made an extra $2 million without any cost.

Leadpages channel is a great inbound marketing podcast because landing page conversion is easily one of the hardest things to master. And they make it seem almost too easy.

#4: B2B Growth

A B2B marketer has his/her own fair share of problems. This includes aligning sales and marketing, proving ROI to the top-brass, and creating professional yet jargon-free content.

This is precisely why having a dedicated digital marketing podcast where industry leaders share how they solved the same issues is so useful.

B2B Growth has a LOT of very useful content on nearly every imaginable B2B marketing topic.

Don’t know what to say on that sales call? Check out their episode on how to use sales humor in your pitches.

Think your designer emails are a hit with the audience? You might want to hear the episode on why this is sometimes a bad idea.

Want to build a B2B referral program? They got a full session on that too.

What’s great about B2B Growth is they mix first-hand information and marketing philosophy in a way that helps create a more complete picture.

Here’s a quick tip — Pay special attention to how the guys at B2B growth interview their guests. They have an incredibly efficient method for getting to the core of a problem which is critical in any marketing effort.

You can use their questioning techniques to figure out underlying problems and understand your customers better.

#5: The Search Engine Journal Show

Name says it all. Tons of episodes covering everything from the broadest aspect of SEO to social media.

The podcast is hosted by marketing expert Brent Csutoras and Loren Baker and went as Search Engine Nerds before it was rebranded.

What’s great about the SEJ Show is that it acknowledges the shifting nature of the digital marketing industry and brings in expert insight for it.

The digital marketing podcast series has actionable tips on industry specific content.

This includes ranking strategies, conversion optimization, video marketing, social media, paid traffic, search engine updates and more.

Their episodes have featured many industry experts like Google’s Gary Illyes, Tim Soul from Ahrefs and Christi Olson from Bing, among others.

Each episode also comes with its own transcript. This can be helpful for people who’d rather just jump to a topic instead of listening to an entire episode.

The episodes are available on their website, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts. You can also save them to your device.

#6: Customer Experience Podcast

Customer experience has always been the most poorly understood aspect of marketing. And for good reason since it’s all about that fuzzy, feel good human stuff rather than cold, hard numbers.

While many of the digital marketing podcasts have content on how to improve customer experience, none exclusively focus on it.

The Customer Experience Podcast by BombBomb aims to solve this problem by providing content on its namesake. And it sure does a good job.

Most episodes are on how a business owner can build a community. There’s a lot of good advice on creating strong interpersonal relations with clients and audience members.

The risk of things becoming vague and murky always hangs over content on human interactions. Thankfully, the team at BombBomb makes sure this never happens.

All episodes have highly actionable advice backed by sound theory.

For example, in episode 81, GatherUp CEO Aaron Weiche shows how he creates win-win scenarios for both his company and its customers.

There’s a lot of advice on how companies can use social media like Facebook, Twitter and influencer marketing to take engagement to the next level. So, be sure to check them out.

#7: Social Media Examiner (SME) Podcast

The SME social media marketing podcast is somewhat of a blog-podcast hybrid. It’s content is presented both as an episode and as an article.

This makes it very easy to find the information you are looking for. And, if something’s not clear, you can always listen to the episode.

The episodes themselves are detailed, yet easy on the jargon.

Small business owners and marketing veterans alike can derive value from the guest’s insights, which are highly actionable.

As can be expected, the podcast has a lot of content on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram marketing.

But it also goes deeper into the minutiae of influencer marketing and social media analytics.

A great example is their episode on measuring social media marketing with Christopher Penn. The episode goes into detail about why it’s important to use the network effect in social media marketing when framing a marketing campaign.

Conclusion

Certainly there are a lot of podcasts out there and many of which are pure gold. But, the ones we covered above have all the information you’ll need to get a digital marketing strategy in place.

So, here’s a quick recap of all the Podcasts we’ve covered and their respective advantages:

Growth Marketing Toolbox: Provides actionable insights. Experts also share the tools they use.

Data-Driven Marketer: Gives data-backed suggestions rather than ideas and thoughts.

Leadpages podcast: Has some awesome content on copywriting and conversion tactics.

B2B Growth: The only B2B specific podcast.

Search Engine Journal Show: Ideal for experts and beginners alike.

Customer Experience Podcast: The only podcast that focuses entirely on providing a good customer experience.

Social Media Examiner Podcast: Has a lot of content on asymmetrical social media tactics.
